Grace for Grace

Grace for Grace

I first wrote “Grace for Grace” for a BYU Women’s Conference songwriting contest. It wasn’t chosen, but I kept coming back to it and eventually rewrote the bridge. Now it feels like the song it was meant to be.

Melinda Spence recorded it with me and has been a part of the song’s evolution from the beginning. Both she, and my husband Brad, helped with the text of “Grace for Grace”.

We filmed this near the small town, Mountain Green and shot drone footage of the area to use in the video. Thanks to Brad Leishman for his filming work!

The following scriptures verses & quote inspired the text of this song.

  • Brothers and sisters, we need each other! As covenant-keeping women and men, we need to lift each other and help each other become the people the Lord would have us become. And we need to work together to lift the rising generation and help them reach their divine potential as heirs of eternal life. We could do as Elder Robert D. Hales and his wife, Mary, have done and follow the proverb “Thee lift me and I’ll lift thee, and we’ll ascend together.” I know that through the enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and our faith in Him, we can do it. I pray we will put our trust in Him to help us help each other live happily and eternally as we ascend together… (We’ll Ascend Together By Linda K. Burton –Relief Society General President April, 2015)
  • D&C 93:2, 11-13 2 And that I am the true light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world; 11 And I, John, bear record that I beheld his glory, as the glory of the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, even the Spirit of truth, which came and dwelt in the flesh, and dwelt among us. 12 And I, John, saw that he received not of the fulness at the first, but received grace for grace;13 And he received not of the fulness at first, but continued from grace to grace, until he received a fulness; 20 For if you keep my commandments you shall receive of his fulness, and be glorified in me as I am in the Father; therefore, I say unto you, you shall receive grace for grace.
  • 3 Nephi 18: 24 Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do.
  • Mosiah 16:4 Thus all mankind were lost; and behold, they would have been endlessly lost were it not that God redeemed his people from their lost and fallen state.
  • Matt 11:28 ¶ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

My testimony is this… Jesus Christ has asked us to hold up his light, lift one another, keep his commandments, love God, and remember the forgotten, the lost and the poor. As we strive to follow him and do these things, even poorly and imperfectly, our hearts are softened and we begin to learn more about who he is. He will not take our agency away, so we must turn toward him; as we do, he can then lift us from our sinful state, in this fallen world. There is no one else I would rather yoke myself to than him. Grace for grace, he molds us and binds us to him. He is no respecter of persons. (Acts 10:34) He invites all to come unto him. He kept his promise to come and redeem us and I love him for it.

Grace for Grace

We’re learning to see, as  we join with Thee, that Thy yoke is easy. We come to know ho much we can grow, if we will only. Open our eyes, share what’s inside, then listen intently to Thy Spirit’s flow. Arising, we show we follow Thee boldly!

Side by side. Face to face. Holding up His light in this fallen place. We’ll overcome as we receive our Savior’s love, Holdin’ on, grace for grace.

We’ll rise together, lifting each other, standing for holy. Even our pain, our heartbreaks and stain, they’re growing our knowing. Once we were lost, now saved by the Son, keep Thy mercy flowing. And send us Thy love with pow’r from above as we write our story.

Side by side. (side by side) Face to face. (face to face) Holding up His light (hold His light) in this fallen place (place) We’ll overcome (overcome) as we receive our Savior’s love, Holdin’ on, grace for grace.

Come unto Me, all ye weary; For I am meek. Find rest in Me.

Side by side. Face to face. Holding up His light in this fallen place We’ll overcome as we receive our Savior’s love, Holdin’ on, grace for grace.
