President Russell M. Nelson was a beloved prophet and leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who possessed a huge and tender heart. He wrote the lyrics for the hymn “Our Prayer to Thee,” which was included in the new LDS hymnbook, Hymns- For Home and Church, before he passed away in September 2025. His tenderness, testimony, and humility are deeply felt within the lyrics of this new hymn.
Russell M. Nelson was a remarkably accomplished man. In addition to his religious leadership and lifelong service, he was a pioneering cardiac surgeon who helped develop the first artificial heart-lung machine. He was also a gifted linguist, conversant in 12 languages, and an accomplished pianist. With perfect pitch and the ability to play by ear, he often performed classical pieces such as Chopin’s “Prelude in C Minor”. He clearly understood the language of music well enough to pen these beautiful lyrics!

We pray to Thee, our Heav’nly Father,
With grateful hearts and deep devotion.
We thank Thee for our great Exemplar—
Thy beloved and atoning Son—
Who gave Himself as sacred ransom,
That we may live again with Thee!
Our joy is full, our song so gladsome;
Renew our faith and hope in Thee.
2.We pray to Thee, our Heav’nly Father,
With humble hearts and adoration.
We thank Thee for our loving Savior,
Who came to save from death and sin.
He gave to us Thy truth to brighten
Our path, to help us walk His way—
To love and serve, to lift and lighten
The lives of others day by day.

We pray to Thee, our Heav’nly Father,
With grateful hearts and deep devotion,
In promised joy and endless splendor—
May we be bound to Thee as one!
We seek Thy mercy and forgiveness
And pray to know Thy holy will.
We yearn for Thee; we plead in meekness.
May we Thy holy laws fulfill.

On the topic of prayer President Nelson has said –
“Through prayer, we can show our love for God. And He has made it so easy. We may pray to Him any time. No special equipment is needed. We don’t even need to charge batteries or pay a monthly service fee.”
“Be prayerful. Call upon God for the strength you need as you labor diligently to become a better version of yourself—a better disciple of Jesus Christ, a brighter light in the world. For ‘they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint’ (Isaiah 40:31).”
“I have a firm belief that praying for those in need is pleasing to God; in fact, He commands us to turn to Him and to pray for others! However, it is my own personal experience that when I ask God in prayer for direction on what I can do to help minister, lift, love, and support those in need, He answers these prayers with specific and simple things I can actually do to bless one of His children. I invite you to consider how your thoughts and prayers can be a catalyst for God to inspire and direct you toward acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity. Imagine how much good you could do in the world—and in your own family, school, and workplace. As we seek to be His healing and helping hands, we surely will exalt the Lord.”
