Nearer My God to Thee — Jacob’s Dream

This hymn has been a favorite of mine since I was a teenager. And because I know how beloved it is, not just for members of The Church of Jesus Christ but for Christians everywhere.
Songwriting is the act of baring one's soul to another in the form of words and music.

This hymn has been a favorite of mine since I was a teenager. And because I know how beloved it is, not just for members of The Church of Jesus Christ but for Christians everywhere.

I began writing this song in April 2021 after discovering Elder Wirthlin’s talk, ‘Sunday Will Come.’ At the time, it had been nearly a year since Eli passed away….

It was fun and interesting for me to look at the whole of the month of January’s teachings through music. These truths are foundation and beautiful.

This arrangement of “Baptism” is a beautiful adult/child duet with Marilee & Blake Roberts, recorded Jan 2023. This song is a suggested song for the Come Follow Me Lesson: June 23–29: “Worth … the Riches of the Whole Earth”

This video is an instrumental lyric video of the song “Shine On” from the LDS Children’s Songbook. This song talks about allowing the light of Jesus Christ to shine through us everyday, just as the sun rises each day.

I love how this song talks about God’s creations in the first verse, which makes me think of the circle of life with all plant, animal and human life. In the second verse it then testifies that “on a golden springtime, Jesus Christ awoke”. Wow! This is the best news in the history of all news. This is the pinnacle on which all of Christianity stands.

This arrangement was created for a group of Primary children to sing for their Primary Program during sacrament meeting this coming fall. We wanted to share it with whoever else might enjoy it!

Over five years ago I wrote a hymn to submit to the new Church hymnbook (it didn’t get selected). A few months ago, I came back to this hymn to look over it and see if I should record it, but I found it needed a lot of improvement. With some time, perspective and more experience with all I have been working on since then, I could see that it needed more work. The message of the song is largely the same, but much clearer and more clarified.
