Disciple of Christ by Nik Day

Hello! “Disciple of Christ” is a song by Nik Day. It is the youth theme song this year and I chose it for this week’s Come Follow Me lesson entitled, “Preserved by His Marvelous Power“.  This arrangement is a collaboration with my triplet nephews on my husband’s side! Nathan, Josh and Zack did such a great job. It was a super fun project to work on with them. They had sung it in Church recently so I told them we should record it together. Brad’s sister, Carrie, had written the harmony part they sang together and I added my little spin on it. I am so happy with how it turned out and how well it fits into our Come Follow Me lesson. Download the recording below.

In the manual it says:

When compared with the Lamanite armies, Helaman’s “little army” (Alma 56:33) of young men shouldn’t have stood a chance. Besides being few in number, Helaman’s soldiers “were all … very young,” and “they never had fought” (Alma 56:46–47). In some ways, their situation might seem familiar to those of us who sometimes feel outnumbered and overwhelmed in our latter-day battle against Satan and the forces of evil in the world.

But the army of Helaman had some advantages over the Lamanites that had nothing to do with numbers or military skill. They chose Helaman, a prophet, to lead them (see Alma 53:19); “they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them” (Alma 56:47); and they had “exceeding faith in that which they had been taught.” As a result, they were protected by “the miraculous power of God” (Alma 57:26). So when facing life’s battles, we can take courage. Helaman’s army teaches us that “there [is] a just God, and whosoever [does] not doubt, [will] be preserved by his marvelous power” (Alma 57:26).

A little about Nik Day, the composer:

  • Nik Day, a singer and songwriter from Salt Lake City, Utah, wrote the song “Disciple of Christ”. Day has written hundreds of songs for the Church of Jesus Christ, and his songs have been translated into more than 40 languages and performed around the world. His music is featured on the Youth and EFY albums.
  • Day’s goal is to put uplifting, gospel-based music in every home and to support and provide hope for listeners. He has said, “A lot of times we ‘follow’ people on social media or want to build our ‘followers,’ but the only being we should truly follow is Christ. We need to try to be like Him, say what He would say, serve as He would serve”.
  • Day has also written youth theme songs for other people to sing, such as “I Will Go and Do,” which was sung by David Archuleta. He also travels to many countries to put on songwriting workshops for Latter-day Saint youth.
