Faith

Faith, is the suggested song for the New Testament lesson “An High Priest of Good Things to Come” studying the books of Hebrews 7–13. This primary song has a beautiful, simple melody and the lyrics describe what could be an obscure principle, faith, with simple object lessons. I remember singing it a lot as a child at church.

In chapter 11 of Hebrews, Paul gives a definition of faith and then lists multiple examples of those who demonstrated faith. Here are some of them:

  • Hebrews 11: 1 Now afaith is the bsubstance of things choped for, the devidence of things not seen. 4 By faith aAbel offered unto God a more excellent bsacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.  By faith aEnoch was btranslated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this ctestimony, that he pleased God. 7 By faith aNoah, being bwarned of God of things not seen as yet, cmoved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the drighteousness which is by faith. 8 By faith aAbraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an binheritancecobeyed; and he went out, not dknowing whither he went. 11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 17 By afaith Abraham, when he was btriedcoffered up Isaac: and he that had received the dpromises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in aIsaac shall thy bseed be called. 19 aAccounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

In the Come Follow Me Manual there is a nice opening passage:

“Even faithful Saints at times suffer “reproaches and afflictions” that can shake their confidence (see Hebrews 10:32–38). Paul knew that Jewish converts to Christianity were experiencing severe persecution because of their new faith. To encourage them to stay true to their testimonies, he reminded them of the long tradition of faithful believers from their own history: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sara, Joseph, Moses—“a cloud of witnesses” that God’s promises are real and worth waiting for (see Hebrews 1112:1). This tradition is yours too. It’s a heritage of faith shared by all those who look “unto Jesus [as] the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). Because of Him, whenever adversity makes us want to “draw back,” we can instead “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith” (Hebrews 10:22, 38). For us, as for the ancient Saints, Jesus Christ is our “high priest of good things to come” (Hebrews 9:11).”

The scripture references for Faith are:

  • Hebrews 11:1
  • Alma 32:28, 42–43
  • 28 Now, we will compare the word unto a aseed. Now, if ye give place, that a bseed may be planted in your cheart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your dunbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to eenlighten my funderstanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

42 And because of your adiligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the bfruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst.

43 Then, my brethren, ye shall areap the brewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth cfruit unto you.
