“Give,” Said the Little Stream, is the suggested song for the New Testament lesson “God Loveth a Cheerful Giver” studying 2 Corinthians 8–13. This primary song is the one my Dad would choose whenever we needed a nice song to sing for our family meetings growing up (or family home evenings)! It is a favorite amongst the toddlers at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I feel bad because I didn’t realize I was singing the wrong lyric and ended up recorded it that way, but I decided to leave it! The reason I recorded “grass” instead of “field” is because I grew up singing it that way and honestly thought those were the lyrics until after I had already polished the recording. I figured it would be our family’s own special touch on the song. Ha ha
Here are a few verses from this section of Corinthians that echo the concepts taught in this song:
-
2 Corinthians 9: 6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall areap also sparingly; and he which bsoweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he apurposeth in his heart, so let him give; not bgrudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a ccheerful dgiver. 8 And God is able to make all agrace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
In the Come Follow Me Manual it says:
“There are so many people in need all over the world. How can we possibly make a difference? Elder Jeffrey R. Holland offered this counsel: “Rich or poor, we are to ‘do what we can’ when others are in need [see Mark 14:6, 8]. … [God] will help you and guide you in compassionate acts of discipleship if you are conscientiously wanting and praying and looking for ways to keep a commandment He has given us again and again” (“Are We Not All Beggars?,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2014, 41).”
The scripture references for “Give,” Said the Little Stream are:
- Deuteronomy 16:17 – 17 Every man shall agive as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord thy God which he hath given thee.
- Acts 20:35 – 35 I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to agive than to receive.
The composers of this song are: Words: Fanny J. Crosby, 1820–1915 Music: William B. Bradbury, 1816–1868. Arr. © 1989 IRI

Well done, once again, Marilee. I smiled through the entire song.
