I Need Thee Every Hour

This week, I am posting another instrumental, piano only, version of our Come Follow Me suggested song, I Need Thee Every Hour. We are studying the middle section of Psalms – from 49-86. This section of Psalms has many themes, but one prominent theme is our need for, and dependence, on the Lord.

In particular, Psalms 61-63 discuss this deep reliance on “the rock that is higher than I” (Psalm 61:2). In Psalm 62 it says – 6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God” and in Psalm 63, King David writes “1 O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; 8 My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.”

I Need Thee Every Hour,” a hymn in the Latter-day Saint hymnbook, was written by Annie S Hawkes (text) and Robert Lowry (Music). The scriptures referenced at the bottom of the hymn are:

2 Nephi 4:16-35

16 Behold, my asoul delighteth in the things of the Lord; and my bheart pondereth continually upon the things which I have seen and heard. 17 Nevertheless, notwithstanding the great agoodness of the Lord, in showing me his great and marvelous works, my heart exclaimeth: O bwretched man that I am! Yea, my heart csorroweth because of my flesh; my soul grieveth because of mine iniquities….20 My God hath been my asupport; he hath led me through mine bafflictions in the wilderness; and he hath preserved me upon the waters of the great deep. 21 He hath filled me with his alove, even unto the bconsuming of my flesh….23 Behold, he hath heard my cry by day, and he hath given me aknowledge by bvisions in the night-time….31 O Lord, wilt thou aredeem my soul? Wilt thou deliver me out of the hands of mine enemies? Wilt thou make me that I may shake at the appearance of bsin? 32 May the gates of hell be shut continually before me, because that my aheart is broken and my spirit is contrite! O Lord, wilt thou not shut the gates of thy righteousness before me, that I may bwalk in the path of the low valley, that I may be strict in the plain road!…I will cry unto thee, my God, the drock of my erighteousness. Behold, my voice shall forever ascend up unto thee, my rock and mine everlasting God. Amen.

and

Psalm 143:1Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy afaithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.”

Your songs and videos supplement my other Sabbath activities so perfectly. Thank you once again. I love this instrumental and will play it again in just a couple of minutes. I feel certain you must put a lot of work and practice into these videos and music. I sure appreciate it.

Thank you. It does take time, but a joy to do during my toddler’s nap time 😉
