Praise to the Man (Praise to Jehovah) Post
This is an upbeat arrangement of the LDS Hymn “Praise to the Man” with a new refrain and second verse centered around Jehovah/Jesus Christ. This arrangement was created for a group of Primary children to sing for their Primary Program during sacrament meeting this coming fall. We wanted to share it with whoever else might enjoy it!
The idea came from Kaitlyn Hawker (a friend and Primary President) during fall 2024 General Conference; when she listened to the talk “The Man Who Communed with Jehovah” by Elder Kyle S. McKay. In the talk Elder McKay said “I raise my voice in ‘praise to the man who communed Jehovah.’ And above all, praise to Jehovah, who communed with that man!” Kaitlyn texted me that day and said, this needs to be a song! I wrote down the idea immediately to tuck it away for later. She called me up a few months later when they were planning the Primary program for the upcoming year and asked me to write this song for it. The theme for their primary program is going to be the restoration of the gospel leading up to the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. As I shared my first draft with her, she asked for the 2nd chorus to be all about Jehovah. I had the 2nd verse about Jehovah but not the 2nd chorus. She and I got off the phone and immediately wrote down some ideas then talked again and came up with the last chorus text together. The sheet music also includes a violin part that you can hear in the background of the lyric video. This will be played by Emily Clark during the program, she is also the one who played violin for “Covenant Road“. 🙂
Here is the text of this arrangement:
(refrain)
Hail to the Prophet
Hail to Jehovah
(Verse 1)
Praise to the Man who communed with Jehovah!
Jesus annointed that prophet and Seer.
Blessed to open the last dispensation,
Kings shall extol him, and nations revere.
(Chorus 1)
Hail to the Prophet, ascended to heaven!
Traitors and tyrants now fight him in vain
Mingling with Gods he can plan for his brethren;
Death cannot conquer the hero again.
(refrain)
Hail to the Prophet
Hail to Jehovah
(Verse 2)
Praise to Jehovah who communed with a man and
ever and ever he reaches out his hand.
He will return with his angels in glory;
Leading, completing, his beautiful plan.
(Chorus 2)
Hail to Jehovah descended from heaven!
Knees bow and tongues confess that Jesus is the Christ.
Mingling with God, we can enter His Kingdom.
Jesus has conquered death for all men.
(refrain)
Hail to the Prophet
Hail to Jehovah
Jesus has conquered death for all men.
This hymn goes well with this entire year of Come Follow Me lessons in studying the Doctrine and Covenants. This book of scripture is made up of revelations from Jesus Christ to (almost all) Joseph Smith. Over and over again in these revelations, Jesus Christ tries to help us understand who he is and how we can come to him. I echo what Elder Mckay said: I love and revere Joseph Smith, who was willing to seek and listen to the Lord; and above all, I honor and praise my Lord Jesus Christ in speaking to that prophet and all prophets, seers and special witnesses of Christ, in all times and dispensations.
