Rejoice, the Lord is King! Philippians

Rejoice, the Lord is King!, is the suggested song for the New Testament lesson “I Can Do All Things through Christ Which Strengtheneth Me” studying the books of Philippians; Colossians. The composer of the text referenced a scripture from Philippians for this hymn. This was also the suggested song for another lesson in the New Testament back in May when we studied the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ in the gospels.

Here are a few verses from Philippians that echo the concepts taught in this song:

In the Come Follow Me Manual there is a beautiful opening passage:

“Paul wrote his epistles to the Philippians and Colossians while he was a prisoner in Rome. But these letters don’t have the tone you might expect from someone in prison. Paul spoke more about joy, rejoicing, and thanksgiving than he did about afflictions and trials: “Christ is preached,” he said, “and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice” (Philippians 1:18). And “though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding … the steadfastness of your faith in Christ” (Colossians 2:5). Certainly, “the peace of God” that Paul experienced in his difficult circumstances “passeth all understanding” (Philippians 4:7), but it was nonetheless a reality. In our own trials, we can feel this same peace and “rejoice in the Lord alway” (Philippians 4:4). We can, as Paul did, rely completely upon Jesus Christ, “in whom we have redemption” (Colossians 1:14). We can say, as did Paul, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13; see also Colossians 1:11).”

Paul is a great example to me of someone who continuously rejoiced in the Lord. There have been times in my life when thinking of the grace of Jesus Christ, his atonement and resurrection and the ability for us to be forgiven through repentance and to be saved…has been the only thing that has given me hope and peace! I am forever grateful for the mercy of God and his Son.

The scripture references for Rejoice, the Lord is King! are:

  • Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.
  • Psalm 32:11 11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

The composers of this song are: Text: Charles Wesley, 1707–1788 – Music: Horatio Parker, 1863–1919

Thanks again, Marilee, for such an encouraging and energetic rendition of a great hymn. As I watched and listened, I thought to myself, “That’s my cousin!” I love being on the same team with you. You’re doing a great thing with these productions.
