Shine On

Shine On, is the suggested song for the New Testament lesson “Be Thou an Example of the Believers” studying the books of 1 and 2 Timothy; Titus; Philemon. This arrangement is a simple accompaniment style that allows for a sing-along. The song can be found in the LDS Children’s Songbook.

Here are a few verses from this section of scripture that echo the concepts taught in this song:

    • 1 Timothy 4:12–16 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. 15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

In the Come Follow Me Manual it says:

“Timothy was relatively young, but Paul knew that he could be a great Church leader despite his youth. What counsel did Paul give to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:10–16? How can this counsel help you lead others to the Savior and His gospel?”

I think that those who are “an example of the believers”, are those people who, behind closed doors and in all places and times, strive with all of their heart to become more like Jesus Christ. They recognize areas where they might be a hypocrite and sincerely repent to God, trying again each day to love as he loves. They are people who have the light of Christ, i.e. the Holy Ghost with them. AND isn’t this a message to all young missionaries around the world, who feel inadequate and inexperienced… and don’t we all feel that way sometimes? We all have something to offer and we can remember that about ourselves and others.

The scripture references for Shine On are:

  • Matthew 5:14–16 14 Ye are the alight of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a acandle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your alight so shine before men, that they may see your good bworks, and cglorify your Father which is in heaven.

The composer of this song is: Joseph Ballantyne, 1868–1944
