The Wise Man and the Foolish Man

This week’s suggested song is “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man” from the LDS Children’s Songbook. This song is a beloved song to sing during Primary at our church. All the youngest kids especially love it and you can’t forget to do the hand motions when you sing it: “the rock” (plant right fist in palm of left hand), “rains” (let hands descend from high in the air), “floods” (raise hands with palms up), “Sand” (wiggle fingers and move arms back and forth in front of body), and “washed away” (wiggle fingers and move arms out away from the body)! 🙂

The following are the scripture references for this song as it’s found in the Children’s Songbook:

  • As Jesus concludes his Sermon on the Mount – he wraps it up with this Analogy: (Matthew 7:24) ¶ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
message Jesus gave as part of his sermon on the mount:
  • Helaman 5:12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

This week’s Come Follow Me lesson is studying Matthew 6-7 and is titled “He Taught Them as One Having Authority”.

In the manual its says:

The Sermon on the Mount is one of the best-known discourses in Christianity. The Savior taught with rich images, such as a city set on a hill, lilies of the field, and wolves disguised as sheep. But the Sermon on the Mount is far more than a beautiful speech. The power of the Savior’s teachings to His disciples can change our lives, especially when we live by them. Then His words become more than words; they become a sure foundation for life that, like the wise man’s house, can withstand the world’s winds and floods (see Matthew 7:24–25).
