Master, the Tempest Is Raging – Piano Arrangement

This week’s Come Follow Me lesson (February 27 – March 5) is studying Matthew 8; Mark 2-4; Luke 7 and is titled “Thy Faith Hath Saved Thee”. The suggested song is “Master, the Tempest Is Raging” which can be found in the the LDS Hymn Book. This song depicts in musical form, the story found in Matthew and Mark 7, when Jesus Christ calms the stormy seas while out with his disciples. What I found striking about this hymn, was it’s use of metaphor to expand the meaning of that story to what we may face in our daily lives. This music video includes LDS bible film depictions of three miracles performed by Jesus Christ, which are just some of what is related in this section of scripture.

The following are the scripture references for this song as it’s found in the hymn book, both of which are also included in this week’s assigned scripture study sections:

  • Matthew 8:23-27 23 ¶ And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. 24 And, behold, there arose a great atempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. 25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. 26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye afearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and brebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. 27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the asea obey him!

  • Mark 8:36-41 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, aPeace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great bcalm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so afearful? how is it that ye have no bfaith? 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

In the manual its says: “Have you ever felt the way Jesus’s disciples did in the storm at sea—watching the waves of water fill the boat and questioning, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” In Mark 4:35–41, you will find four questions. List each one, and ponder what it teaches you about facing life’s challenges with faith in Jesus Christ. How does the Savior bring peace to the storms of your life?”
