I wanted to share another song that I wrote back when I was 17 years old. It was one of the first songs I’d written. It’s called “Every Second of Our Lives.” As I sat down to write this post I tried to remember what inspired me to write this song, it took me a minute to figure it out! As I thought about it, I’m pretty sure I was looking back at my life so far (at the ripe old age of 17) remembering my childhood and feeling nostalgic.

My family and my friend Heidi and her siblings. I am probably 15 years old in this picture.

I do remember recalling all the fun times I had with my family and my friend Heidi. Heidi and I have been friends since we were babies. She’s always been an amazing friend to me. We both lived in Olympia, WA until my family moved to Utah when I was 12. We had so much fun as children; always playing and daydreaming. (Ps, you’ll notice below that the lyrics say “and boys, no way.” I have no idea why I wrote that, because we were always boy crazy!)

I also remember picturing in my mind the lane down to one of the beautiful houses my dad had built. We had a small stream along the side of the lane leading out to the bay in front of our house. I have great memories of playing out in the forests of Washington with my siblings and our friends.

A more recent picture of our old house. I found this on Zillow. I haven’t been back there since 1994.

Verse 1: I look back on that day, when we used to say, “Best friends forever and boys, no way.” It was a happy place inside this moon’s big face, the more we knew the brighter it would become. Dancing through earth and sky, never questioned why. We couldn’t wait to see the day when we would be beautiful and free.
Chorus: And Life goes on with feelings so strong that we, don’t even realize. The world is made up of minutes and hours, we need to appreciate every second of our lives.
Verse 2: We’d sit and watch the stars. Wonder about the way things are. We’d talk about them, they were so very far. Now we will fly, trying to touch the sky. Where will we go, where will it end.
Chorus: ‘Cause life goes on with feelings so strong that we, don’t even realize. The world is made up of minutes and hours, we need to appreciate every second of our lives.
Verse 3/Chorus: Now I will stand, come and hold my hand. We’ll chase the stars and never let life go on until we’re gone without feeling strong, that the world is made up of minutes and hours. We need to appreciate every second of our….
Chorus: Life goes on with feelings so strong that we, don’t even realize. The world is made up of minutes and hours, we need to appreciate every second of our lives.

Every Second of Our Live – Lyrics

I had fun thinking about what inspired me to write “Every Second of Our Lives” and taking a trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoy the song. What are some of your favorite childhood memories?

Have a great week! Marilee

Love that song! Thanks so much for sharing the backstory. I’m also super impressed that you are able to post pictures from years ago. I aspire to be as organized as you are with your photos and memories.

Thanks so much Joe! My friend Heidi actually sent me that picture, so I don’t think I’m as organized as you might think I am, ha ha. 🙂 Thanks for the nice comment!
