Family History – I Am Doing It

Family History-I Am Doing It, is the suggested song for the New Testament lesson “Rejoice with Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory” studying the books of 1 and 2 Peter. This fun little primary song has a pioneer, country feel with a great message about doing family history work for those who are living now and our ancestors who have gone before. I included some images of people from my own family history in this video, all of whom are special to me!

In chapters 3 and 4, Peter teaches about the Savior Jesus Christ organizing missionary work in the spirit world to preach to those who were in spirit prison. These concepts are also taught today in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints… to do temple work, (baptisms and family sealings) for those who are dead; that they might choose to accept or reject the covenants that the living have done in their behalf. Being able to possibly help God in his work to save all souls who have ever lived is why family history work is so important to the Latter Day Saints. Many in the world who are not members of this Church have also embraced and gotten excited about family history work as well and want to learn where they come from and what they can learn from their own ancestors.

1 Peter 3:18–20

  • 18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
  • 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
  • 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water

1 Peter 4:6

  • 6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

In the Come Follow Me Manual it says:

“One day each person will stand at the judgment bar and “give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead” (1 Peter 4:5). How can God judge all people fairly when their opportunities to understand and live the gospel are so different? Notice how the doctrine that Peter taught in 1 Peter 3:18–204:6 helps answer this question. How do these verses strengthen your faith in God’s fairness and justice?

To explore this doctrine further, study Doctrine and Covenants 138, a revelation President Joseph F. Smith received as he pondered these writings of Peter. What additional truths did President Smith learn? (See also Gospel Topics, “Baptisms for the Dead,” topics.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.)”
