This was a cool song for me to learn and come up with the sheet music for. I have done one other Lauren Daigle song before “Light of the World” and it is one of my favorites. She is amazing. “Hold on to Me” speaks to my soul, especially those times when I am just barely hanging on…i.e. every other day! I love the prayer in the lyric for Jesus to “hold on to me” when I am barely breathing, don’t believe in myself, when the weight of expectation is too heavy, when I don’t feel worth defending and tired of pretending….hold on to me! I have felt all of those types of struggles from time to time. Since working on this song I have tried to put this mindset to practice a few times when I was feeling down. I have imagined myself being held by the Lord and supported as I struggled to move through the day and the things that were hard for me to manage. I like the idea of using our imaginations, our senses and spiritual visualizations to express our faith in Jesus Christ. I think this is one powerful way we can implement our discipleship and express our willingness to allow him to shape us in life’s refiner’s fire.
I am also trying to figure out how to better handle life’s trials. I want to complain less and have more joy in my day to day life. I wonder how I can rely on the Savior more and allow his strength and the peace he brings help me to handle my struggles with more grace and less angst!
In the Come Follow Me lesson this week it says:
After Joseph Smith died, the Saints were driven from Nauvoo. They now faced a 1,300-mile (2,100 km) journey through a harsh wilderness. Brigham Young, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, worried about how the Saints would survive the trek. In a temporary settlement called Winter Quarters, he pleaded for guidance. The Lord’s response is recorded in section 136. “By helping the Saints remember that their conduct on the journey was as important as their destination, the revelation helped transform the westward migration from an unfortunate necessity into an important shared spiritual experience” (“This Shall Be Our Covenant,” in Revelations in Context, 308).
In Doctrine and Covenants 136 the Lord lists several ways we can endure well….
- 4 And this shall be our covenant—that we will walk in all the ordinances of the Lord.
- 11 And if ye do this with a pure heart, in all faithfulness, ye shall be blessed; you shall be blessed in your flocks, and in your herds, and in your fields, and in your houses, and in your families.
- 19 And if any man shall seek to build up himself, and seeketh not my counsel, he shall have no power, and his folly shall be made manifest.
- 21 Keep yourselves from evil to take the name of the Lord in vain, for I am the Lord your God, even the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.
- 23 Cease to contend one with another; cease to speak evil one of another.
- 24 Cease drunkenness; and let your words tend to edifying one another.
- 27 Thou shalt be diligent in preserving what thou hast, that thou mayest be a wise steward; for it is the free gift of the Lord thy God, and thou art his steward.
- 28 If thou art merry, praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.
- 29 If thou art sorrowful, call on the Lord thy God with supplication, that your souls may be joyful.
- 31 My people must be tried in all things, that they may be prepared to receive the glory that I have for them, even the glory of Zion; and he that will not bear chastisement is not worthy of my kingdom.
- 32 Let him that is ignorant learn wisdom by humbling himself and calling upon the Lord his God, that his eyes may be opened that he may see, and his ears opened that he may hear;
- 33 For my Spirit is sent forth into the world to enlighten the humble and contrite, and to the condemnation of the ungodly.
- 42 Be diligent in keeping all my commandments, lest judgments come upon you, and your faith fail you, and your enemies triumph over you. So no more at present. Amen and Amen.
