We Are Sowing

We Are Sowing (Hymn no. 216) is a hymn I wasn’t as familiar with so it was fun to do a piano arrangement of it. The lyrics reflect the principles of the Parable of the Sower and are interesting and poignant!

The Come Follow Me lesson is called “Who Hath Ears to Hear, Let Him Hear” and is studying Matthew 13; Luke 8; 13. The Parable of the Sower, found in Matthew 13 is actually one where Jesus explains to his disciples the message behind the parable, which isn’t the case every time. My understanding is that the goal is to have a soft and open heart, good ground, for the seed to take root, be nourished, flourish and grow. I don’t think the amount of fruit, hundredfold, sixty or thirty is the point of the parable, just that the seed multiplies and bears fruit. Each plant might be different, producing more or less fruit & different types of fruit, but each will become abundant in good soil.

Matthew 13:

    • 9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
    • 18 ¶ Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
    • 23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
The scripture references for this hymn are Doctrine and Covenants 6:33
  • 33 aFear not to do bgood, my sons, for whatsoever ye csow, that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow dgood ye shall also reap good for your ereward.
and
  • They that sow in tears shall reap in ajoy. 6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious aseed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his bsheaves with him.

This hymn was written by:

  • Text: Anon., Pure Diamonds, Cleveland, 1872 (Interesting that we don’t have the author of this text!)
  • Music: Henry A. Tuckett, 1852–1918
